History of the Lunenfeld Beautification Grants

Marvin Lunenfeld and his wife Gail

Marvin Lunenfeld and Gail McCarthy

In 2004, Gardens Buffalo Niagara introduced the Marvin Lunenfeld Beautification Grants, a program named for Garden Walk Buffalo’s founder, Marvin Lunenfeld. Since then, Gardens Buffalo Niagara has provided nearly $150,000 in Marvin Lunenfeld Beautification Grants. More than 200 grants have been awarded for beautification projects for block clubs and community groups within the Garden Walk Buffalo neighborhoods.

Read more about Marvin’s lasting impact on Buffalo’s gardens.

Following the success of the Lunenfeld Grant program, Gardens Buffalo Niagara launched the Vibrant Buffalo Beautification Grants in 2019 in order to take this successful grant program throughout all of Buffalo. In 2022, our two programs merged, and now we fund the entire City of Buffalo through our Lunenfeld Beautification Grants, which provide up to $1,000 to block clubs and community groups toward:

  • Community gardens

  • Street side planters

  • Historic garden restoration

  • Tree planting

  • Street pole basket hangers

  • Rain gardens

  • Any public gardening project, limited only by your imagination!

Projects must be publicly accessible, visible from the sidewalk, and bring neighbors together. More information and a link to the application can be found at the link below!

The application process is easy and we are happy to offer assistance. Projects must be completed by July 15.
